SEEING & FEELING
CHARLESTON'S TENSIONS
Images 1 & 2: The tension between old and new. I love
the parade of columns on the Edmonston-Alston House
(1), which dates from before the Civil War, and how they
lead the eye to the antique gas pump in the driveway. In
contrast, the Ravenel Bridge (2) spans the Cooper River and displays the latest in bridge
architecture and technology. The light seems to play with the bridge as the day progresses,
dancing off its structural cables.
Images 3 & 4: The tension between simplicity and grandeur. The modest front door of this
house on South Adgers Wharf (3), one of the few remaining cobblestone streets, contrasts with
the stately, ornate perfection of the Calhoun Mansion on Meeting Street (4).
