Images 7 & 8: The tension between decay and preservation. One of Charleston’s paradoxes
is that in the midst of such beauty and grandeur, one sees the presence of decay. This home
on East Bay Street is clearly suffering from neglect (7), and there are many homes outside the
historic district that are in much worse shape. In contrast, the pink home on East Battery is
perfectly preserved and well cared for (8).
