            Images 11 & 12: The tension between

poverty and wealth. For me, this is one of
the most palpable tensions in Charleston.
Here, a homeowner has constructed his or

her own version of the lavish alleyways that are prevalent in the historic district (11). For this

resident, some flowers, a few strands of colorful glass fishing floats, and a simple hammock
will do. In contrast, this stately Georgian-style home (12), perched on a large lot that boasts a
magnificent live oak tree, suggests a level of wealth that few of us will ever know.

Images 13 & 14: The tension between business and pleasure. Charleston is a thriving city
filled with small shops and restaurants that cater to the locals and the throngs of visitors. This

shot taken on Meeting Street showcases the variety of architecture and conveys Charleston’s

fascination with windows (13). Although the general atmosphere of Charleston is bustling, the
people take time to enjoy life and to appreciate the visual feast that Charleston’s architecture
offers, as this final view of East Battery suggests (14).
