5 ON THE ROAD WITH VIDEO
ounter-intuitive is a word we frequently
use to describe concepts we discover at
CNyghtFalcon. And it applies to videogra-
phy as well as photography. The first counter-
intuitive principle when shooting travel video
is to use your video camera (or hybrid DSLR)
like a still camera. Your goal is to capture and
preserve the flavor of an experience without
distraction. Using your camcorder like a still
camera is an approach you can apply in many
travel situations. This technique comes in es-
pecially handy when you are at crowded vistas,
or on a tight time schedule. We’ll talk about the
specifics later, but first we need to look at the
differences between viewing still and moving
images.

A photograph preserves an instant in time with
a unique point of view. The end result of still
photography is an album of single images that
viewers can participate in choosing which im-
ages they view, in what order they are viewed,
and the length of time they spend viewing each

The key to a successful establishing shot is its ability to set the stage for the narrative that will follow. In this case, an old, aban-
