stand on rocks that were fired three billion years ago, the Atlantic Ocean to my west.
In North America, time begins east over the Atlantic, and here I stand at the beginning of that time—58° north latitude in the Western Isles of
IScotland—on the remains of the volcanoes of Gaia. Ancient peoples pushed here after the ice age glaciers began retreat. They quarried, transported,
and built with this lithos, this stone. The peoples who followed embellished Lithos knowhow on this northern quadrant of earth through Roman
engineering, the ancient castles and fortresses, the early churches, the arching Gothic Cathedrals, and the slate-roofed cottages rising at the dawn of the
industrial revolution. What force has quarried and transported me? My home continent of North America is built chiefly with timber. What little stonework
there is is mostly cold structure. Here it is different: Here stones wrap me, stones stand with me, stones soar from me, and stones speak with me . . .
