Interpolation and Emotion
The portrait on the previous page is emotionally powerful for many reasons - some of
which we have explored. The image is also powerful because of its use of space and the
way in which it invites the viewer to enter into the experience. That experience is as much
a part of how the image was composed as it is the way the human eye passes that image
to the brain.
The brain receives the visual image and then builds a visual story around it. The brain
will “fill in” areas that are lacking in detail, or which are not as the brain expects them to
be.
The key to creating emotion is understanding how the brain will likely interpret the im-
age it receives. This is part of “seeing through the lens.” For most photographers, seeing
through the lens is about understanding the limitations of the camera and lens. For our
methodology, it is as much about that as it is understanding how to use the camera and
lens to convey the desired emotion to the viewer.
