In preparation for this article, I worked with Falcon as he set up the 3
options within RedCart. Almost every aspect of RedCart can be cus-
tomized and the list of options is endless - paper sizes, paper finishes,
frame or no frame, books, and so much more. You can even control
whether or not galleries are "public" or private.
Even the option to make a gallery public doesn't mean unlimited ac-
cess is granted to anyone who wants to look at the images. In fact,
there are levels of access from which you can choose:
1. Truly Public Access:
A gallery is posted to your home page and anyone any-
where can see it. We don't use this option. Why? See the
next two options for more details, but essentially it is
about effectively marketing our work.
2. Public but Email Address Required:
Everyone who wants to can view a gallery is required to
enter their email address. Why would you use this op-
tion? There are two reasons: First, this allows you to col-
lect email addresses. Second, requiring people to enter
an email address can discourage some people, for ex-
ample people who have no business viewing someone
else's wedding proofs, from entering that gallery.
3. Public but Email Address and Password Required:
Recently, we did an event for Steve Smith's family foun-
dation. Steve is a pro football player whose foundation
helps battered women. Only people who have access
to the password will be able to access the gallery and
we will be able to check the email addresses entered to
make sure only people known to the foundation will be
able to access the image.
4. Private URL:
Choose this option to make sure that only authorized
people can access a gallery. Private galleries are not dis-
played on the home page. We use this for some of our
commercial accounts.
5. Private URL and Password Required:
Should someone discover the URL, he or she would still
need to login correctly.
In whatever way you configure a gallery's viewing options, once you
are in the gallery, all the images are viewable. (See figure 1) I should
