                  This area wasn’t easy either. It is a kind of transitional
                  section in the image. If the area under the couch was at

                  least 4 F-stops darker than the area around the windows,
                  this area was between 2 and 3. Better, but not substan-
                  tially. The area around her legs and the shadows were
                  easily 3. The areas outside the shadows were closer to 2.

                  In this case, even a difference of 1 F-stop would have a
                  substantial impact on the emotional effectiveness of the
                  image.

                  Look closely at the leg of the couch behind her. You can
                  even see the coaster under the leg of the couch. Through-
                  out the image, the shadows are discernible but soft edged.

                  This tells me that the volume is reasonably consistent.
                  Again, I could have elected to remove the shadows. Giv-
                  en her dress and the furniture, I wanted to retain a very
                  1930s look to the image.
