“The Wrecked and the Dead” (NF200245-A-SFx)
Location: Somewhere near Durham, NC.
I’ve seen abandoned cars before. I’ve seen wrecked cars many times. I’ve never seen such carnage, so many wrecked, destroyed, neglected, deserted, cars. I was profoundly sad, and the longer I wandered around the wreckage, the more deeply saddened I became. There seemed to be no logic to the destruction. I could feel the memories. I could almost feel people sitting in some of the cars, and the pride they would have felt when these cars were new. The carnage of steel and chrome left me without words.
Adding to sense of loss was the house that faced the road. From a relatively new farm tractor to a recent vintage tow truck, the area around the house was covered with day-to-day signs of life, except no one lived there any longer. It was – literally – as though one day everyone who lived there – including the children – simply left and took nothing with them.
