welcome
e never really considered portraiture as an area of photography that would
interest us. It seemed, well, so overdone. Predictable. And boring too. When
we thought about portraiture, we thought about Olin Mills, Sears, Wal-Mart....
That wasn't for us.
Tracy changed that. In fact, my chance encounter with her that nyght in 2003
had a profound and lasting impact on me, The House of NyghtFalcon, and our work. In fact, I dare say
that that chance encounter gave form, substance and direction to much of the body of work we have
produced over the past decade. The second largest exhibit of our work, "The Face of Woman" in 2006,
would never have been had it not been for Tracy. Somewhere in that first year, I also discovered that I am
fascinated with the human face, especially a person's eyes.
We also discovered how important post-processing is to capturing and conveying the depth of the
emotion we experienced photographing women. As the cover photo and the photo on the facing page
demonstrate, the entire emotional context of an image changes when color gives way to monochrome or
sepia. That, in turn, extended our artistic vision.
Featured in this issue are many of the women who have shaped our work. There is also a photo essay
of the women who have been our muses.
Many of the images in this magazine were created using only ambient light. We didn't own or have ac-
cess to strobes or remotely triggered flashes until 2009 - a full seven years after we started photography.
Everything we now take for granted when it comes to lighting a portrait was honed in those years. Com-
ing to terms with the problems we faced using only natural light prepared us well for using strobes.
Lighting the Un-lightable returns this issue with another complex problem. Andy Walcott and Lew
Brown return as contributors. Both offer insight into aspects of their work that is nothing short of fas-
cinating. "The Vegas Chronicles, Part 2" returns and in this instalment of "Poetically Man Dwells" we
feature an essay entitled, "Still Falls the Rayn." New in this issue is a series called "Nyght-Gallery." This
series features the work of our best students.
