                     When I was growing up in Charlotte in the 1950s and 60s, it was
                     still a relatively small city that harbored big ambitions.  In 1960,
                     it still hovered in the long shadow of its big sister Atlanta.   Atlan-
                     ta, then, was the 24th largest city in the U.S. with a population of
                     487,000.  Charlotte was 59th, with a population of 201,000.  I re-
                     member the local newspaper, The Charlotte Observer, trumpeting
                     our breaking the 200,000 mark.
