Welcome

T he world is vast and its beauty immeasurable.

And yet it is all too easy to become prisoners of the commonplace. We travel the same roads
to work, or if we live an urban life, we take the same subway or bus, or walk the same streets.
We shop at the same places, eat at the same restaurants. Over time, our eyes close and rou-

tine replaces the beauty that lives all around us all the time. Heidegger called this complacency "every-
dayness." All of us, even those of us chartered with seeing the beauty of the world around us, succumb
from time to time to everydayness.
Last year, when we were planning the themes for this year's magazine, we decided that a good place

to begin the year would be looking at all those places so close to us and yet so far from our field of vision
that we rarely, if ever, see them. So, this issue is simply called "Other Places." This issue isn't about exotic
places. It is about places near to us everyday of our lives. All those places we don't ever see, or, places
which we promise ourselves that one day, when we have time, we will visit. Some, like Wells-Fargo, Utah,

attach us to our past, and yet, thousands of people pass it everyday - and truth be told were it not for a
sign JD Milazzo and I saw as we exited an interstate in search of adventure, we would never have found
it.
"See the World Again. For the First Time" means many things to us. Sometimes, it simply means

opening our eyes to what is next to us, across the street from us, or around the next corner.......
